To say she's ill-informed is an understatement. Mass shootings and mental health go hand in hand. However, unstable mental health is not the only reason why mass shootings happen. Poor gun control, inactivity from the US government, uneducated people on mental health in seats of power, people who care about guns more than children, etc.

To conflate mental illness with insanity is a grave mistake. Mass murderers are not normal. This woman is pushing to control “sane” people with guns. That’s you and me.

Wow, she is wrong in many areas of phycological profiling. But if you look at all the mass shooters to date, Local Law Enforcement to the F.B.I was called on them do to threats in the past each one had a phycological eval which also proved they should not be near firearms. From social media accounts looked at, to show that all of them should have not been near or around a firearm and were under psychological evaluation as of current state. She must be leftists considering she is wrong as the rest of them.

Carmela Epright has no idea what she is speaking about on this issue. She is just as nuts as they are.

@1:51 England like the United States? Ummmm not really sweetheart your meds are calling. Did you not read the history of red coats, Paul Revier, ummmm hello Buller, Buller... I will leave it at that.

As for mass shooters, each one had a Px for a high amount of antidepressants, or anxiety medication ect... that is a public fact. You name it they all have had a pill prescribed to them, from a therapist stating that they need to be on this medication. And when they get off the medication or refuse to take it, that will lead to another situation. Which can lead to a mass shooting?

This wave of mass shootings started after Huawei's 5g technology was implemented throughout the USA. 5G technology causes multiple health disasters, one of which is to interfere with healthy function of the brain. This is an attack by China's Huawei tech company. The massively powerful cell towers can be used to magnify DEW and do cause fires.

The only thing I agree with is that we should not blame people for having mental illness because it would be like blaming people for having a disease such as cancer.

The legal definition of mental illness doesn't match DSM's definition. The legal definition is designed to allow those who are ill to be locked up.

Psychopathology is subjective anyway and to be honest it mostly just refers to behaviours and cognition that are not normative in the culture that you are a member of. Because they aren't normative, people with them struggle to function in society. But at the same time the fact that the U.S. has a crazy amount of gun violence can be seen as a culture bound syndrome, in which case everybody within that culture has some form of psychopathology (relative to wider western culture).

Personally I do look at mass shooters as having a mental illness (by definition of their shooting), because that behaviour is so far removed from normative behaviour in western culture (although not as far removed in U.S. culture). But that's just my subjective opinion..

When is the world finally going to study priscribed and or abused priscribed medications to answer the following question: In criminal cases of violence was the suspect consuming priscribed medications x amount of time before the crime and if so what medications where consumed. Than make the results of the study fully public.

As a person dealing with mental illness, I admit that I've had homicidal thoughts along with suicidal thoughts. There are many factors to take into account when it comes to becoming a mass shooter, but I believe that mental illness is critical to people to even think about killing others. Under the influence of mental illness, if you allow yourself, you can deteriorate as a person to the point that you lose the value of your own life. Eventually you might start blaming society for your problems and thus start developing homicidal thoughts/ideation to the point that you might start planning to kill others and in worst cases, go through with said plan. You don't just wake up one day and say "Yup, I'm going to kill people today". No, you slowly degrade mentally until the point at which you've either lost contact with reality or have a very distorted version of it. I'm speaking form personal experience. Mass killers use murder as a way to enact revenge on others (and to regain control in their life, because that's something that they lacked before the committed the act), because in their mind even innocent people have contributed to their misery. I.e. they blame people for being happy and for not talking to them or dating them (a toxic and distorted mindset). They kill them because they have a mindset like this "I want to kill myself but I won't let society win, so I'll take some people down with me"(This doesn't apply to all mass shooters, for example Nikolas Cruz didn't try to commit suicide and tried to run away, but I think it was more of an act out of fear and panic and he might be regretting not killing himself now, knowing what awaits him in prison.). Most people that commit mass murder are mentally ill, but most mentally ill aren't mass killers. I agree that there are some exceptions in which shooters are not mentally ill, but that's like a small fraction of most mass murderers.

Mental illness isn't just having obsessions or seeing bugs. Conduct and personality disorders are still a viable possibility. Yes, the vast majority of mentally ill people are not a danger to others, there are still aspects of violence that can be attributed to certain disorders.

So...she's saying...most people who commit mass shootings are mentally healthy? Because last I checked, Ill was the opposite of healthy, so if she's saying they're not mentally ill, she must be claiming they were healthy. How on earth did she reach that conclusion? I think it's "doctors" like this who are the reason we can't solve the problem.

and lordy, she stigmatizes the "crazy" as much as she does the shooters. Voice hearers are threatening as they talk to "invisible friends," and the homeless are "delusional" even though they've lost everything. If I lost everything, I wouldn't behave to social norms, either.

Believe it or not buying a gun and killing someone isn't just a normal person type of thing

  • WrongHandedGuitarist

Apparently they just let anyone be doctors these days... I agree with the comment that this is the worst TED talk I have ever seen.

Webster defines mental illness as "any of a broad range of medical conditions (such as major depression, schizophrenia, obsessive compulsive disorder, or panic disorder) that are marked primarily by sufficient disorganization of personality, mind, or emotions to impair normal psychological functioning and cause marked distress or disability and that are typically associated with a disruption in normal thinking, feeling, mood, behavior, interpersonal interactions, or daily functioning."

The person being prescribed Clonazepam for social anxiety may not exhibit any violent or destructive behavior but they are by definition not mentally fit. A person walking into a classroom with a shotgun to destroy the lives of his classmates is also by definition not mentally fit. I don't think anybody is actually saying mass shooters aren't to be held accountable because of mental illness, nor is anybody actually saying that all mentally ill people are mass shooters in the making. Not all mentally ill persons are or exhibit violent behaviors, but all mass shooters are in fact mentally ill. It's an actual fact supported by decades of research.

Also, do some research on Eric Harris before you spread falsehoods. Seriously, it is embarassing for a doctor of any kind to deliberately omit factual information to further an agenda like this. Eric Harris was meeting with a therapist with some regularity and was prescribed both Zoloft and later Luvox to help with his depression, mood swings and OCD that he was diagnosed with. Other examples like Adam Lanza, Randy Stair, Seung-hui Cho and so on all have varying conditions that fall under the blanket term of mental illness as well.

I have only a mild degree of Bipolar Depression, PTSD/Social Anxieties, and ADD/ADHD with borderline intellectual functionality/general learning disabilities. People with mental illnesses are misunderstood, and they are not serious threat to society. I live in the country, not in most places where mass shootings occurred. The government government and organizations behind stero typing the mentally ill causes people to be discriminated and treated wrongly.
