iPad Pro (2018) Review: Two weeks later!

  • SPONSOR: Go to molekule.com and enter VECTOR at checkout to save $75. I received a lot of great feedback on my iPad Pro (2018) review and I appreciate it. But, I also got some criticism and I think it was valid and fair. I didn’t have as many negatives on my list as some other reviewers because I reviewed the new hardware and most of the negatives deemed directed at the not so new software. Also, I didn’t address the iPad Pros ability to replace a laptop, which is something almost every other review focused on extensively. Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/vectorshow?sub_confirmation=1 So, after spending two weeks now with Apple’s third generation iPad Pro, I decided to make this re-review all about what I missed last time: iPad Pro as laptop replacement and the iPad Pro software story. In other words, what I got wrong — and what I still think many other reviews got wrong. Yeah, it's like that. Hit play and let's do this! It’s an iPad... Apple still sells MacBooks for a reason. So many youtubers have to trash new devices for views instead of reviewing its abilities and improvements

I have been watching and reading all of these reviews, but none of them seem to address student users. I’m starting a Masters Program in 2019. That said I expect to do a fair bit of reading, writing and not taking on any device. I own a 13 in MB Air (2014), but the battery no longer holds a significant charge. Since I am overseas, replacing the battery (ie shipping costs) is costly. That said I am contemplating a 2018 iPad Pro 12.9 inch and the new 2018 MB Air. Writing this out here in the comments makes me think that the iPad is probably my best bet.

isn't that graph ipads vs notebooks worldwide sales, showing that ipad sold less than laptops? like splitting it by brands of laptops doesn't show that more users have ipads over a laptop, but more ipad users over a certain brand of laptops?

I replaced my MacBook Pro with iPad Pro 11inch. So far so good. I don’t do video or photo editing. I browse the web , book travel , watch movies and play games. I agree iPad could use its own OS but I think it’s fantastic for the way I use it. I had both the computer and iPad for 2 weeks and didn’t even realize i stopped using the computer completely. As a pilot I don’t write long emails and the iPad supports ForeFlight , the worlds great software for general aviation. I have it wrapped up in the Otterbox Symmetry Case with an iPad pencil. No keyboard necessary.

People make so many excuses for Apple? Why? What do you gain from it? If your goal is to buy a simple machine to do simple things, then why dont you go to Best Buy and buy $400-$500 laptop? Why do you make so many excuses for an iPad pro that cant do a lot of things that $500 laptop can do? As rich as Apple is, they cant make an affordable laptop for people that just need a basic computer? A Macbook Air should not cost $1000 in 2018. They finally got the iPad right at $329. And excuse me for being naive. But what does iPad pro do that an iPad cant? Does it have NFC? Expansion of any kind? I'm not an iPad person myself. I've never had one. I did buy a mini for my wife thinking it was the kind of fad, I have one too type of thing women like to have. But she never uses it. I have no use for one. We have a few laptops at home, a few desktops, and our phones. What do you really need an iPad for?

I've owned and extensively used a wacom cintiq and an iPad pro. Yesterday I sold my wacom cintiq, and purchased the new iPad pro.
The reason being, procreate and the apple pencil. Pro create is the best drawing software I've ever used, way better than Photoshop.
Apple pencil is the best stylus I've ever used

Yes, I totally agree that Apple should create iPad OS. I’ve been thinking this for a while now and with the latest 2018 iPad Pro it makes even more sense!

I use an aging iMac and an iPad Pro 12.9. My work includes showing images and the iPad pro wins on this front. I must admit to needing to want to use it exclusively and if you want to do something bad enough you will. Over time I see the software becoming more fluid but iPad is the future.

iPad is a real computer if you're like +60 years old... For everyone else, it's a fancy magazine you look at while taking a dump.

Seriously...+$1000.00 you got to be fking kidding me...Apple has priced themselves out of the market.

You nailed all the features that need to come to the iOS that Google got right, but Google still didn't get right what Apple got right. First, the iPad Pro needs it's own development team developing it's own OS. Secondly, they need to absolutely add accounts through the iCloud, just as Google does through it's Google Account. Thirdly, back up the hardware with all the software the pros use. Why is Xcode not on iPad? Why is it taking so long for Adobe to get their product to the iPad? If Apple could make these few adjustments, it would absolutely kill laptops for the fewest of unspoken reasons. Fist, battery life vs compute power can't be matched in laptops. The iPad does not heat up and run a loud fan, as a laptop with iCores does. Thirdly, the compute power of an equal CISC processor is double the cost to produce compared to the A12. And lastly, iPads are natural mobile devices, as they accept cellular radios from day one. Laptops fail to really be truly mobile, because of all these reasons, however Google is making a strong case with the Chromebooks. Only problem with Chromebooks is the lack of seriously developing them into a workhouse ARM chip cellular mobile war horses always connected to the Internet. If these two can bridge the gaps, I can't see a niche where laptops survive, other than the dying breed of hardcore input dinosaurs.

No no no... with the ridiculous price of the pro model iPads they won’t have a future with new user. You seem to be sucking up on apple to make excuses. Steve Jobs is gone and they abandoned everything he envisioned. They are clearly comparing the iPad to systems running a full OS so yes, they are subtly hinting at wanting this to be a laptop replacement.

I did not buy my iPad Pro older version to replace a laptop, but I thought I would be able to do some work on a go. No I wasn't allowed to for so many bugs mainly. I am wondering if there are more people disappointed with how those iPads were performing. For some time even Pages were not working on my iPad and to do a simple text document is always struggle. Picture editing in Lightroom with only jpegs - problems as well. Now why should I trust buying newer more expensive iPad?

I thought it was APPLE was claiming ipad pro can replace the laptop. (or 90% of it.) So... bad start for the review.

I’m glad you mentioned. I did feel a bit strange using a phablet as my sole computing device, on most days. But I’m glad that I’m not the only one that considers it a legitimate daily driver, at least for personal use in my case.

Thank you! Elitists spend a lot of time and money and get rolled by technology and innovations every single time. What is good music? Jazz? No way! What is good art? Abstract? What? What is a computer? A tablet? Are you crazy? (And for that matter, what is a good video game? Mobile games? Call the nut-house, we have a looney here!) Yet the sales speak for themselves. I replaced my Mac Book Pro steadily over time with iPads ever since I first obtained an iPad 2 back in 2012 for drawing and I never returned to using a PC of any sort, outside of the office. Not a single outlet or influencer EVER factor in how regular people use iPad and/or why these users trust Apple. When you have an Apple Store that can service your device and software questions without selling you anything consistently, daily, why would anyone trust anyone else? I purchased my iPhone XS Max from my carrier and they slipped in an additional cost without my knowledge (in the form of insurance which I was not informed about especially in the monthly costs), I’ve never experienced anything like that within the entire decade of me being an Apple Store costumer. The fire-balls of rage and misinformation from shills and those they are beholden to are tone-deaf, often maladjusted and misleading. A lot of this is just my 2¢ on why I just use Apple devices to log onto the internet instead of anything else but Apple has consistently made things so simple and painless. Otherwise, iPad and iOS replacing traditional computer interfaces and keyboards and so on is simply technological evolution.

    Great Stuff.

Edit: and as I always say, when it comes to cost, if you want Apple performance (and in the case of iPhone XS Max, durability), you’ll be spending Apple prices. I’ve seen peoples abysmal mobile game screenshots on Discord from other phones. Yeah... no sale, I’ll stick to Apple. Also, you can finance any iPhone or iPad. The stupidity out there from those complaining about cost.

I would love to have one but the price is too steep for me and looking at getting the basic iPad instead because I don't really need the extras of the iPad Pro like:
Better display - the display on the Standard iPad is good enough for me
Smart Keyboard - don't really need a keyboard
Screen size - is ok with me, I don't mind the bezels
Better camera - I don't use tablet cameras
Better FaceTime camera - Don't really need it as much

and IOS is pretty much the same so I don't want to pay extra for features that I won't be using anyway.

It is capable and fast only if you compare it shitty laptop. It is gonna suck compared with 6-core, 32GB RAM , 4TB SSD laptop with fast NVidia card. Try editing 50 MP RAW photos or 8k video on it.
