This is what happens when you reply to spam email | James Veitch

  • Suspicious emails: unclaimed insurance bonds, diamond-encrusted safe deposit boxes, close friends marooned in a foreign country. They pop up in our inboxes, and standard procedure is to delete on sight. But what happens when you reply? Follow along as writer and comedian James Veitch narrates a hilarious, months-long exchange with a spammer who offered to cut him in on a hot deal. TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Look for talks on Technology, Entertainment and Design -- plus science, business, global issues, the arts and much more. So I take it he doesn't know that one love is a common saying that is like a greeting for Rasta Jamaicans and Africans? That's why "Winnie" was saying it, but she wasn't rasta so that makes no sense lol.

Only way to actually scam someone is scamming someone you know in order to avoid these awkward situations.

I have become very fond of James Veitch. If you haven’t seen it check out his video w/his roommate and ducks. Back to this video, these scammers are relentless and do not care who they victimize. They wholly deserve all the crap that Mr. Veitch is giving them. I LOVE it! A few years ago, I was doing online dating and encountered a couple of these “Nigerian princes”. They post a nice profile w/a photo of a very good looking man. After they begin communicating with you, they will start w/the romantic B.S., then let you know that they are currently out of the country on business in, of all places, Nigeria! After a few days to a week of texting and/or emailing, they then plead for your assistance with a transaction/deal they are trying to complete and that they need you to wire them $20,000 (this can vary).
I should have strung them along like this man did, but my response is typically that they contacted the wrong woman as I don’t have that much money and would not wire it to someone I didn’t know if I did have access to that kind of money. Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve ever had that much money in an account.
Of course, after this info, I don’t hear from them again, but it saddens me to think that there are people out there who are lonely and desperate enough to comply with their request. These are thoroughly despicable people!
