iPad Pro Review: Photo Editing w/ Lightroom, Photoshop, Affinity Pro

  • Yayınlanma Tarihi:  1 yıl önce
  • We switched from using a laptop to the new 2017 12.9" Apple iPad Pro ($450-$1,200 on Amazon http://help.tc/ipad), and we love it. Lightroom Mobile is FAR faster than our desktops, and the Apple Pencil ($100 on Amazon http://help.tc/pencil) works better than our Wacom. In particular, Affinity Photo (http://sdp.io/affinity) is a great value, though it's not as capable as Photoshop (yet). I just bought the new 2018 iPad Pro today. So far I really like it. I went with the 1TB version. Not only can I edit my photos but I downloaded the Microsoft One Note app and I am going to start doing Math tutorials on my channel. I got a Tv to have behind me in my studio like yourself so that I can’t point to the equations when needed and will be doing screen recording on the iPad. Although it won’t fully replace a desktop yet I feel the amount of work I can get done on this machine is well worth the purchase especially considering I can write on it. Being able to throw a light mirrorless camera and the iPad into a bag on short trips truly is a game changer.

Lr is a new application for me. Ive been using canon's dpp 4.9.20.0 on a hp laptop that cannot run lr. Im looking at options. Have considered buying imac 4k or 5k displays. Im a hobbyist. I have a friend who uses the ipad pro to do his hobby editing. The only apple product i own is an old ipod touch. I know that i dont want to spend $3000 just to do photo editing for my non paid hobby. If it gets too complex. Ill go back to shooting jpegs and let my canon 80d make all the decisions. Thanks for your video. It provides another avenue.

Hi Tony, would appreciate if you could revisit the use of an iPad a year on and look at the solutions for those who find the subscription to adobe a little much, what are our options? In the mean time if you know of any other reliable material I can look at, appreciate the advice. Michael. PS on the travelling light topic I’m getting the impression with these high pixel sensors prime lenses “Batis” are making more sense given their weight versus picture quality trade-off. Example Batis 18mm versus 16-35 Sony brick shooting landscapes, (for me I found I was 90% of the time at the 16-20 range). Anyway just some more ideas for your shows... thanks mate, Michael

That’s an expensive toy and I’m not sure why you glossed over that. Exponentially
more expensive than getting a Wacom tablet. I just added it up on the Apple website. $3633 for what you showed in the video.
I wacom tablet is about $125.
I know the new iPad Pro looks like fun but don’t say that the tablets are expensive LOL. Because compared to the iPad Pro they are almost free.
And where are you storing all those photos? Surely you could only get one photo shoot up there before you would have to take it off and store it somewhere?

The 12.9 I-Pad Pro is awesome, and I would like to get it with the 512 GB and the LTE, Wireless and Cell service. I saw on Adobe that the new Photoshop CC 2019 will be coming out in 2019 for the I-Pad. I am waiting for the Apple Event on Oct 30, to see the new I-Pads and the I-Macs. I would rather use the I-Pad in lieu of the Wacom tablet, you can do more than just draw on it, and send your work to the I-Cloud and the Adobe Libraries. I also want to get a keyboard from Brydge which looks like the Keyboard on the MacBook Pros with out the bar, it comes in Gold, Silver and Space Gray to match the I-Pad. It will be better than the MacBook Pro with more power and touchscreen.

So I got an iPad Pro, and in Lightroom mobile when I start editing and moving a slider it blurs the image for a second until I finish moving the slider it is really annoying it’s definitely slower than Lightroom CC for windows. On my windows 10 laptop it runs super smooth and fast it doesn’t have that blurred when I move sliders to edit

Thanks Tony. I have been looking at backup solutions whilst on the road. This is another solution which I should have thought of being an Apple user from way back. I will be away for 3 months making mainly 4K videos. This might be just what I need because I will be able to edit on this holiday. I have been following you and Chelsea for several years now. Thanks for all the good stuff you put on YouTube.

Hi Tony and Chelsea! Thank you for the comparison! I like your videos! I am in between those 2 devices (iPad Pro 10.5 in. / 512GB. and Surface Pro i5 / 8GB RAM / 256GB.). I am getting more & more serious about photography (fine art, landscape...) which is becoming my passion. I need a portable device / tablet, since I spend a lot of time on the go and have some free time in between the jobs. I know that it is best to use full version of PS but since I see a lot of complaints about Surface Pro (lagging, loading, etc.), and mobile version of LR on IPad Pro is pretty decent, plus “Affinity Photo” app, ability to edit RAW images on IPad Pro & better pencil... Maybe it’s not a bad idea to get an iPad Pro after all? What is your opinion on that? Would I be able to produce a “pro” level images with LR mobile, PS Fix, PS Mix and Affinity?
    Please let me know!
Thank you very much in advance!
    Igor.

Thanks so much for this video. You are picking my interest. I want to take a lot of my old photos and work with them on my iPad to organize and make them better/tweak them. I have been putting off learning programs like Photoshop but your video is pushing me in that direction. I’ve also been indecisive about the new iPad Pro.

Hello, how about the import time ? my tests from a nikon d700 to ipad 6th generation 2018 looks like 3 - 4 min per 1GB of photos in the Photos app of Ipad which will sync with my mac (2 GB of traffic). I import in LR and than another 1 GB sync between lightroom and creative cloud plus the same between cc and computers. It is not practical if you are shooting events, your camera will be stuck to an ipad for 10 - 20 - 30 minutes (depending on the size of the card). It seems fine to work at night but you can easily have the laptop with you...

Tony, any comments on if I can use the iPad Pro as a larger LCD screen to view still photos taken at a shoot - I just can't see the darn tiny photos on my cameras LCD to see if they are in focus. I would like to just shoot and see it instantly on the iPad Pro .... ? I was also looking at the Feelworld 7" screen, but not sure which - if at all - would work better.
    Thanks,

I was so dissapointed when I tried it: Imports do not work directly into LR, it has to go via the camera roll. And the lagging in screen updates when you pull the sliders are extremely disturbing IMO. I can wait to get home to my PC, sorry to say.

If you were a professional photographer you couldn’t use this workflow.
I shot 96gig on my Canons yesterday which would take forever to upload to CC and download to your desktop etc.

Although the iPadPro and software are capable they are not yet practical for prifessional workflow in my opinion.

The Apple keyboard is atrocious though. You can't move around much or it'll fling your iPad, keyboard cover and all, onto the ground.

Great video! I also enjoy culling on the iPad which is much faster than culling on my workstation... And the intuitive gesture based UI is a very good way to manipulate photos, plus start the editing right after the shoot is very cool. But... One limitation I encountered so far is that importing the photos from the SD card has to go through the camera roll on iOS. Which is not clever, especially if iCloud sync is turned on. I don't want to upload dozens of D810 raw files to the iCloud to then delete them again after I imported the files to Lightroom CC. How are you dealing with this? Or do you have a large enough iCloud and loads of bandwidth and you don't worry about that? I know that pausing iCloud sync is an option. But cumbersome and one more thing to remember...
